School groups — who runs the most schools in Sweden?

A growing share of Sweden's schools are run by corporate groups — companies that own multiple school operators. We have mapped 75 groups that run at least 3 schools each, with a total of 1,292 schools and 223,911 pupils.

AcadeMedia AB is the largest with 374 school units. The five largest groups together run 737 schools — a significant market share among independent alternatives.

What does this mean?

Concentration is not inherently negative — economies of scale can provide better administration and more resources for teaching. But it raises questions about choice and competition, particularly in municipalities where one group dominates the independent offering.
