How the national average is calculated

All values come from Kolada (municipal level) as an unweighted mean across Sweden's municipalities with data — every municipality contributes one value regardless of size. This differs from weighted national figures but better reflects the average municipality.

Skolverket doesn't publish after-school-care statistics at the unit level, so we can't compute an unweighted school-level mean the way we do for compulsory and upper-secondary schools.

Frequently asked questions

What is fritidshem (after-school care)?

Fritidshem ("fritids") is pedagogical care for children aged 6-13 before and after the school day. It complements school with meaningful leisure and recreation. Staff are typically a mix of fritidspedagoger (after-school-care educators) and barnskötare (childcare workers).

What counts as a pedagogical higher-ed degree?

A teaching degree, fritidspedagog degree, preschool-teacher degree or other higher-ed qualification preparing for pedagogical work. The share is much lower than in preschools because many after-school centres are staffed by childcare workers without higher-ed degrees.

Why isn't there a school-level value for after-school care?

Skolverket publishes after-school-care statistics as municipal aggregates — not per individual centre. So all our after-school-care values come from Kolada (municipal level) as an unweighted municipal mean.

How do I compare my after-school centre with the national average?

Since the national average is computed from municipal data (Kolada), it's most accurate to compare the municipality's value with the national average. Individual centres within a municipality may deviate in either direction from the municipal mean.
