How to read the index

The segregation index measures how a school's neighbourhood (DeSO) deviates from the municipal average in terms of the share of foreign-born residents. A value of +20 means the area has 20 percentage points more foreign-born residents than the municipal average. -15 means 15 percentage points fewer.

Median: -0.4 pp · Standard deviation: 11.5 pp · Min: -25.2 pp · Max: +66.4 pp

Each dot represents a school. The colour shows the segregation index: red = high share of foreign-born relative to the municipal average, blue = low share. Stronger colour = greater deviation.

Highest segregation index — areas with the greatest upward deviation

Schools where the DeSO area has the greatest over-representation of foreign-born residents compared to the municipal average. A high positive index indicates that the school is located in an area with a significantly higher share of foreign-born residents than the municipality as a whole.

Lowest segregation index — areas with the greatest downward deviation

Schools where the DeSO area has the lowest share of foreign-born residents relative to the municipal average. A low negative index means the area is significantly more homogeneous than the municipality overall.

Internal variation per municipality

Municipalities with the greatest spread in segregation index — that is, the largest difference between the most and least segregated school areas. A high spread indicates that the municipality has both strongly segregated and highly mixed areas.

Methodology and sources

DeSO areas (Demographic Statistical Areas) are Statistics Sweden's smallest geographic divisions for statistics on population, income, and the labour market. Each school is linked to the DeSO area where it is located.

Share of foreign-born is calculated from SCB's birth region data as the proportion of residents born outside Sweden (Europe excluding Sweden + rest of the world) out of the total population.

Segregation index = the DeSO area's share of foreign-born minus the municipality's average share. The measure thus shows how the school's immediate neighbourhood deviates from the municipal average.

Important caveats: The index measures residential segregation, not the school's actual student composition. Schools with large catchment areas or active school commuting may have a student body that differs significantly from the neighbourhood. Furthermore, "foreign-born" is a broad category that includes both Nordic neighbours and people from countries far away.
