Upper-secondary diploma (Gymnasieexamen)

The diploma issued when a student completes a national upper-secondary programme. Required for higher education or certain careers.

A gymnasieexamen (upper-secondary diploma) is issued when a student has completed a national upper-secondary programme and met the examination requirements. There are two types: a higher-education preparatory diploma (högskoleförberedande examen) and a vocational diploma (yrkesexamen).

Requirements

To receive a gymnasieexamen, a student must achieve passing grades in at least 2,250 out of 2,500 upper-secondary credits, as well as passing grades in Swedish, English, and mathematics. For a vocational diploma, a passing grade on the diploma project (gymnasiearbete) linked to the programme is also required.

Significance

The upper-secondary diploma is an important foundation for further studies and employment. Employers and universities generally require it. Students who do not achieve the diploma receive a study certificate (studiebevis) instead, which does not grant the same eligibility.
