The register lists 4,624 active compulsory schools across 290 municipalities. "Compulsory school" is the school form most people mean by "school" in Sweden — years 1 to 9 — and it is the figure Skolkoll's own school directory publishes.
Every row in the register is a school unit (skolenhet), not a building or an operator: one operator can run several units under the same school name, and one unit can be registered for several school forms at once. A unit registered for both compulsory and upper-secondary education is therefore counted in both figures, which is why the school forms below do not add up to a single national total.
The other school forms are counted separately: 1,272 upper-secondary schools and 8,798 preschools. Preschool is not compulsory schooling and upper-secondary education is voluntary, so mixing them into one number would answer a different question than the one asked.
The register is a moving target: Skolverket adds new school units and deregisters closed ones continuously, so the figure changes between school years and even within one. Skolkoll syncs the register weekly and every count on this page is recomputed from that sync.
