Corporate group (Koncern)

A group of companies with a common parent company that runs independent schools.

A corporate group (Swedish: koncern) is a group of companies controlled by a common parent company. In the education sector, this means that several independent schools are owned — directly or indirectly — by the same owner. The largest school corporate groups in Sweden operate hundreds of schools and serve tens of thousands of students.

Major school corporate groups

Examples of major groups include AcadeMedia (Sweden's largest private education company), Internationella Engelska Skolan, Kunskapsskolan and Thorengruppen. Together, the five largest groups operate several hundred school units.

How does Skolkoll identify corporate groups?

Skolkoll maps corporate group affiliation by linking each school's provider (via organisation number) to ownership data from the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket). If the provider's company is part of a corporate group — i.e. has a parent company — the group name is shown on the school page. This gives parents and researchers the ability to see which schools are organisationally connected.

Why does it matter?

Corporate group affiliation affects, among other things, financial flows, pedagogical frameworks and branding. A school in a large corporate group may benefit from economies of scale (administration, IT, learning materials), but it also raises questions about freedom of choice and competition — particularly in municipalities where a single group dominates the independent school market. See the analysis of school corporate groups for a complete ranking.
