New in the municipality?

Have you just moved or are you planning to move? Here we help you find schools in your new area and understand how to get a place quickly.

Find schools in your new municipality

Municipality detail pages are still Swedish, but they contain the full school list, key indicators and contact details.

Compulsory-school guide Placement, distance, quality signals and school visits

Step by step

  1. Contact the municipality

Call or email your new municipality's education office. They can tell you which schools have places and help you.

  2. Explore the schools

Use Skolkoll's search tool to see all schools in the area with merit values, teacher qualifications and distance.

  3. Contact schools directly

Call or email the schools you are interested in to check availability and book a visit.

  4. Apply for a place

Municipal schools: via the municipality's online service. Independent schools: directly with the school.

  5. Request a handover

Ask your old school to transfer grades, the individual development plan (IUP) and any support programme to the new school.

Important to know

Obligation to admit (mottagningsplikt)

Municipal schools must admit children who live in the municipality. You have a right to a place!

Free school choice

You can choose any school in the entire country, not just in your municipality.

Fast process

Municipal schools can often arrange a place within a few days. Independent schools may have a waiting time.

Tips when moving

Plan ahead

If possible, start looking for schools before you move. Book school visits during holidays.

Consider the school route

How will the child get to school? Is school transport available? Can they walk or cycle?

After-school care and friendships

Choosing a school where other children from your neighbourhood attend makes it easier to form friendships.

Talk to neighbours

Ask neighbours and other parents about their experiences with local schools.

Bring the documentation

Make sure grades and the IUP are transferred. If the child has special support, inform the new school early.

Preschool when moving

Common questions

How quickly can my child start at a new school?

Municipal schools have an obligation to admit and can often arrange a place within a few days to a week. Independent schools admit if they have places available.

What if we move mid-term?

The child has the right to start at a new school immediately. The municipality is obliged to arrange a place. Grades and documentation are transferred from the old school.

Can the child stay at the old school after moving?

Yes, if you arrange the transport yourself. However, your new home municipality will normally not pay the school voucher to the old municipality if a local place is available.

How do we choose the right school in a new area?

Use Skolkoll's search tool to compare schools. Look at merit values, teacher qualifications and distance. Booking a school visit is highly recommended.

Who can help us find a school?

Contact your new municipality's education office. They are obliged to help you find a school place.

What documentation do we need from the old school?

Ask for grades, the individual development plan (IUP) and any support programme (åtgärdsprogram). The school must help with the handover.
