Common questions about school choice

How do I choose a school for my child?

Start by identifying the schools in your area. Then look at factors such as merit value, teacher qualifications, pupil numbers and distance. Use Skolkoll's search tool to compare schools and read up on each school's profile.

When do I need to choose a school?

The choice of compulsory school (förskoleklass) usually happens in January–February the year before school starts. The upper-secondary choice is made in year 9, typically in February–March. Contact your municipality for exact dates — they vary between municipalities.

Can I change schools mid-term?

Yes, you can apply for a school transfer at any time. Contact the new school to check if they have places available. Municipal schools have an obligation to admit you if you live in the municipality.

What is the difference between municipal and independent schools?

Municipal schools are run by the municipality, while independent schools (friskolor) are run by private organisers. Both follow the same national curriculum and receive public funding through the school voucher (skolpeng). Differences may exist in profile, pedagogy and size.

What is the proximity principle (närhetsprincipen)?

The proximity principle means that pupils have priority at schools near their home. Municipal compulsory schools often apply this when places are limited. Read more in the glossary

How do I know if a school is good?

There is no single definition of a "good school" — it depends on what matters to your family. Use Skolkoll's search tool to compare merit values, teacher qualifications and other key indicators. Visiting the school and talking to other parents is also valuable.
