Profit ban (Vinstförbud)

The political proposal to limit or prohibit profit-taking from publicly funded school operations.

A profit ban (vinstförbud) or profit cap is a political proposal to limit or prohibit the ability to extract profit from publicly funded school operations. The issue has been one of the most polarising in Swedish education policy.

Debate

Proponents argue that taxpayer money intended for education should not become shareholder profits. Opponents argue that the possibility of profit drives quality, innovation, and willingness to invest. Several inquiries have been conducted but no outright profit ban has been implemented — instead, requirements for financial transparency and quality have been tightened.
