VAL (Further education for teachers)

Supplementary pedagogical training for school staff who lack a teaching degree. Individualised study plan based on prior learning.

VAL stands for Vidareutbildning av lärare och förskollärare (Further education for teachers and preschool teachers). It is a government initiative aimed at people already working in schools who lack a formal teaching degree. The programme makes it possible to become a qualified teacher without starting from scratch.

Who can apply?

VAL is aimed at people who have subject knowledge (often an academic degree) and professional experience from teaching in schools. You do not need to have completed a traditional teacher education programme. Applications are made via antagning.se.

How does it work?

Each student receives an individualised study plan based on their prior learning. The programme typically takes 1–3 semesters and can often be studied part-time and at a distance, making it possible to work simultaneously. The focus is on pedagogy, didactics, and school-based training (VFU).

What does it lead to?

After completing the VAL programme, you can apply for a teaching licence from the National Agency for Education. The licence grants the right to award grades independently, permanent employment, and typically a better salary (often SEK 2,000–4,000 more per month).
