Deferred school start (Uppskjuten skolstart)

The option to postpone school start by one year for children judged not ready. Decided by the home municipality.

Uppskjuten skolstart (deferred school start) means that a child begins preschool class one year later than normal — at age 7 instead of 6. The decision to defer school start is made by the home municipality upon application from the guardians.

Criteria

Deferred school start may be granted if there are special reasons — for example, if the child is judged not to be ready for school. It is an uncommon measure and the municipality makes an individual assessment in each case. The child has the right to preschool during the extra year.
