TIMSS

International assessment in mathematics and science for year 4 and year 8 students, conducted by IEA.

TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) measures students' knowledge in mathematics and science in years 4 and 8. The study is organised by IEA and conducted every four years. The most recent round was TIMSS 2023.

Difference from PISA

While PISA focuses on application in everyday situations, TIMSS tests knowledge more directly linked to curriculum content. TIMSS also assesses younger age groups (year 4), providing a picture of knowledge levels before students reach year 9.

Sweden in TIMSS

Swedish students' TIMSS results have varied over time. Generally, Sweden performs near the international average, with stronger results in science than in mathematics. TIMSS data are used by researchers and policymakers to identify trends in the Swedish school system.
