School inspection (Tillsyn)

Skolinspektionen's review of whether schools comply with laws and regulations. Can lead to injunctions or closure.

School inspection (tillsyn) means that Skolinspektionen monitors whether schools and school providers comply with the Education Act and other regulations. Inspection is a fundamental part of quality assurance in the Swedish school system.

How does inspection work?

Inspection can be regular (all schools are reviewed at set intervals), targeted (based on risk or complaints), or thematic (focusing on a specific issue across multiple schools). Inspectors visit the school, review documentation, and interview staff and students.

Consequences

If deficiencies are found, the school receives an injunction to remedy them. In cases of serious deficiencies, Skolinspektionen can impose fines or, as a last resort, revoke the approval of an independent school, effectively shutting it down.
