Swedish as a second language (Svenska som andraspråk, SVA)

A subject for students whose mother tongue is not Swedish. Instruction is adapted to second-language acquisition conditions.

Swedish as a second language (svenska som andraspråk, SVA) is a separate subject with its own syllabus, intended for students whose mother tongue is not Swedish. Instruction is based on the conditions and methods of second-language acquisition.

Difference from Swedish

SVA uses the same grading scale as regular Swedish and grants the same eligibility. The difference lies in methodology and assessment — SVA instruction takes into account that the student is learning Swedish alongside the subject content. The principal decides whether a student should study SVA instead of regular Swedish.
