Summative assessment (summativ bedömning, or assessment of learning) summarises the student's knowledge at a specific point in time — typically in the form of grades, final exams, or national tests. Unlike formative assessment, summative assessment is not primarily intended to support continued learning but to document the level achieved.
Usage
Final grades, term evaluations, and national tests are all examples of summative assessment. Grades in years 6–9 and upper-secondary school are summative assessments that form the basis for selection to further studies.
