Study guidance in the mother tongue (studiehandledning på modersmålet) means that a multilingual tutor explains subject content in the student's mother tongue, alongside regular instruction in Swedish. It is an important support measure for newly arrived students.
Purpose
The purpose is to enable the student to engage with subject instruction even before their Swedish skills are sufficient. Without study guidance, newly arrived students risk falling behind in subject knowledge while learning Swedish. Study guidance is regulated in the Education Act and must be provided when needed.
