Special teacher (Speciallärare)

A teacher with specialist training who teaches students with special needs in reading, writing, or mathematics.

A special teacher (speciallärare) has completed a special teacher programme (90 ECTS credits) with a specialisation in, for example, reading and writing development, mathematics development, or intellectual disability. The special teacher works directly with students who need adapted instruction.

Responsibilities

The special teacher instructs students individually or in small groups, adapts learning materials and methods, and collaborates with classroom teachers on student progress. Special teachers are in short supply in Swedish schools, and demand is high.
