Skolväsendet is the legal collective term for all publicly funded education in Sweden. It encompasses preschool, preschool class, compulsory school, adapted compulsory school, special school, Sámi school, upper secondary school, adapted upper secondary school, after-school care (fritidshem), and municipal adult education.
Governance
The school system is governed by the state (through the Education Act, curricula, and national goals) but is primarily organised and funded by the municipalities. Independent schools are part of the school system if they are approved by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen).
