School choice process (Skolvalet)

The process where families apply to and choose a school. Municipalities administer the school choice in different ways.

The school choice process (skolvalet) is the process where families apply to and choose which school their child will attend. In most municipalities, the school choice takes place before preschool class (age 6) and before upper secondary school (age 16).

How it works

The municipality sends out information about the school choice and the family ranks their preferences. If more pupils apply than there are places, selection is made — municipal schools typically use the proximity principle, while independent schools often use queue time. Those who do not get a place at their chosen school are guaranteed a place at another school in the municipality.
