SFI (Svenska för invandrare — Swedish for Immigrants) is a free Swedish language course for adults who lack basic knowledge of the Swedish language. SFI is part of municipal adult education (komvux) and is a right for all adults registered in Sweden.
Organisation
SFI is divided into three study tracks (1, 2 and 3) depending on the student's educational background, and four courses (A, B, C, D) with increasing difficulty. The instruction can be combined with work placements, vocational training or other adult education courses.
Significance
SFI is a central part of the integration process. Good Swedish language skills are a prerequisite for entering the labour market and participating in society. Municipalities are responsible for offering SFI within a reasonable time after registration.
