Sami school (Sameskola)

Compulsory school with a Sami profile for years 1–6 in northern Sweden. Run by the Sami School Board.

The Sami school (Swedish: sameskola) is a state school form with a Sami profile for students in years 1–6. It is run by the Sami School Board (Sameskolstyrelsen) and is located in five places in northern Sweden: Karesuando, Kiruna, Gällivare, Jokkmokk and Tärnaby.

Content

The Sami school follows the compulsory school curriculum but with the addition of the Sami language and Sami culture. Instruction is partly conducted in Sami. After year 6, students continue in the regular compulsory school. The Sami school is open to all children, not only those with a Sami background.
