Newly arrived students (nyanlända elever) are defined in the Education Act as students who have been residing abroad and begin their schooling in Sweden, or have returned after more than one year abroad. The definition applies for the first four years in Swedish schools.
Rights
Newly arrived students are entitled to an assessment of their knowledge, an adapted study plan, study guidance in their mother tongue, and prioritised Swedish language instruction. In compulsory school, they may be placed in a preparatory class. At upper-secondary level, language introduction is available.
