Mother tongue instruction (Modersmålsundervisning)

Instruction in the student's mother tongue, offered when at least one guardian has a native language other than Swedish.

Mother tongue instruction (modersmålsundervisning) is offered to students who have at least one guardian with a mother tongue other than Swedish, provided the language is used at home. The municipality is required to offer mother tongue instruction if a suitable teacher is available and at least five students request it.

Organisation

Instruction usually takes place outside the regular timetable, 40–60 minutes per week. Mother tongue instruction is available in over 150 languages in Sweden. Research shows that strong skills in the mother tongue support the acquisition of Swedish and other subjects.
