The equity grant (likvärdighetsbidraget) is a government grant targeted at schools and municipalities with the greatest socio-economic challenges. The grant is distributed by Skolverket based on socio-economic indices.
Purpose
The purpose is to increase equity in Swedish education by providing more resources to schools with the most challenging conditions. The funding is to be used for measures that improve teaching quality — for example, more teachers, smaller groups, or special-educational support.
Scope
The equity grant amounts to several billion SEK per year and is one of the largest government grants in the education sector. It has replaced earlier targeted grants and is intended to be more long-term and predictable.
