Teaching materials (läromedel) are the materials used in instruction — textbooks, digital resources, worksheets, and more. There is no state review of teaching materials in Sweden — each school and teacher chooses freely.
Challenges
The lack of teaching material review means quality varies considerably. Many schools have reduced purchases of printed textbooks in favour of digital resources, which has been met with criticism. Since 2024, government grants are available for purchasing textbooks as part of a push for quality teaching materials.
