Teacher certification (Lärarlegitimation)

Required to teach and assign grades in Swedish schools. Issued by the National Agency for Education after an approved teacher education.

Teacher certification (lärarlegitimation) is a requirement for teaching and independently assigning grades in Swedish schools. The certification is issued by the National Agency for Education (Skolverket) and requires an approved teacher education.

Certification and qualification

The certification specifies which subjects and year levels the teacher is qualified to teach. Since 2015, only certified teachers may assign grades. Uncertified teachers can teach but must have a certified colleague's approval when assigning grades.

The certification requirement

The certification requirement was introduced in 2011 to raise the status of the teaching profession and ensure teaching quality. The requirement does not apply to preschool (where only a preschool teacher degree is required).
