Gender equality (jämställdhet) is a fundamental value in the Swedish school system. The curriculum states that schools must actively counteract gender stereotypes and give girls and boys equal opportunities and conditions.
Challenges
Although girls as a group have higher merit points than boys, gender-stereotyped choices persist — girls are underrepresented in technology programmes, boys in health and social care. Boys' academic performance is a growing concern, particularly among boys from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
