Introductory programmes (introduktionsprogram, IM) are upper-secondary programmes for students who have not achieved eligibility for national programmes. The five introductory programmes are:
- Preparatory education (Preparandutbildning) — for students close to eligibility
- Programme-oriented option (Programinriktat val) — linked to a national programme
- Vocational introduction (Yrkesintroduktion) — provides vocational skills without a diploma
- Individual alternative (Individuellt alternativ) — fully individualised study plan
- Language introduction (Språkintroduktion) — for newly arrived students
Significance
Approximately 13–15% of upper-secondary students are enrolled in introductory programmes. The goal is for students to become eligible for a national programme or find other meaningful activity. The time spent on IM varies — some students need only six months, while others require several years.
