School governance (Huvudmannaskap)

The legal responsibility for running a school. Can be municipal (the municipality) or independent (a private provider).

Huvudmannaskap (school governance) refers to the legal responsibility for running a school or educational operation. The school provider (huvudman) is responsible for ensuring the operation meets the requirements of the Education Act and that students receive the education they are entitled to.

Types

There are two types of school governance: municipal (the municipality runs the school) and independent (a private provider runs the school). The state is the provider for special schools and Sámi schools.
