Compulsory school (Swedish: grundskola) is the compulsory school form in Sweden for children from 6 to 16 years of age. It encompasses preschool class and years 1–9. All children residing in Sweden are subject to compulsory schooling and have the right to free compulsory education.
Organisation
There are approximately 5,000 compulsory schools in Sweden, of which about 800 are independent. Compulsory school is governed by the Education Act and the Lgr22 curriculum. The municipality is obliged to offer all children a place in a compulsory school near their home.
