Completion rate — upper secondary (Genomströmning)

The proportion of upper secondary students who graduate within three years. An important quality measure for upper secondary schools.

Completion rate (Swedish: genomströmning) refers to the proportion of students who complete upper secondary school with a diploma within three years. The measure is a key quality indicator for upper secondary schools and is published by Skolverket.

National average

Approximately 75–78% of students graduate within three years. The proportion varies considerably between programmes — academic programmes have higher completion rates than vocational programmes. Students who do not graduate within three years may continue for a fourth year or drop out.

What affects the completion rate?

Factors that affect the completion rate include students' prior knowledge (merit value from year 9), socioeconomic background, study guidance and the school's support functions. Schools with strong student health services and early interventions for at-risk students tend to have higher completion rates.
