The preschool class (Swedish: förskoleklass) is a compulsory school form for six-year-olds since 2018. It serves as a bridge between preschool and compulsory school and combines play with more structured instruction. The preschool class is free of charge.

Content

The instruction aims to stimulate students' development and learning and prepare them for continued education. The preschool class has its own section in the curriculum with a focus on language, mathematics, creative activities and social interaction.

Organisation

The preschool class is usually integrated with the compulsory school (F–9 schools) and led by preschool teachers or primary school teachers qualified in preschool class. The programme covers at least 525 hours per school year.
