Since 2012, grades in compulsory school are given from year 6 onwards. Previously, grades were first given in year 8. Grades are assigned each term and follow the six-tier grading scale A–F.
Debate
The introduction of earlier grades was controversial. Proponents argued that grades provide clear information about knowledge levels and motivate pupils. Critics pointed to research showing that grades can undermine the motivation of low-performing pupils. The question of grades from year 4 has also been discussed but not implemented.
