Eligibility for higher education preparatory programmes (Swedish: högskoleförberedande program) requires passing grades (at least E) in Swedish or Swedish as a Second Language, English, Mathematics and at least 9 other subjects — a total of at least 12 subjects. This is a higher requirement than eligibility for vocational programmes (8 subjects).
National average
The national average is around 82–84%, lower than eligibility for vocational programmes. The difference is because more subjects are required. Students who meet the eligibility for academic programmes automatically also meet the vocational programme eligibility.
Significance
The higher education preparatory programmes (natural sciences, social sciences, economics, technology, etc.) provide basic higher education eligibility after three years. Students who want to continue to university generally need to complete a higher education preparatory programme.
