Adapted compulsory school (Anpassad grundskola)

Compulsory school adapted for students with intellectual disabilities. Formerly called grundsärskola.

Adapted compulsory school (Swedish: anpassad grundskola, formerly grundsärskola, renamed in 2023) is a school form for students with intellectual disabilities who are assessed as unable to meet the compulsory school's knowledge requirements.

Organisation

The adapted compulsory school follows its own syllabus with adapted knowledge requirements. Instruction can take place in separate classes, integrated within the compulsory school, or in a combination. Students have the right to adapted compulsory school following a decision based on pedagogical, psychological, medical and social assessment.

The name change

The change from "grundsärskola" to "anpassad grundskola" in 2023 aimed to reduce stigma and emphasise that it is an adapted form of compulsory school. In Skolverket's statistics, the school type is abbreviated GRAN.
