Education level

Share of residents with chosen education level per municipality.

University municipalities stand out clearly — Lund, Uppsala, Umea, Linkoping. But the interesting thing is not the peaks but the valleys. In some municipalities fewer than one in five adults have a university education. Their children go to school with different conditions, different role models, different expectations. The map shows where tomorrow's inequality is already built in.

Education level per municipality

The map of education level reveals one of the clearest patterns in Swedish geography. University municipalities such as Lund, Uppsala, Linkoping and Umea stand out with a high share of university-educated residents. Metropolitan municipalities like Solna, Sundbyberg and Molndal also show high levels.

At the other end of the spectrum are municipalities in the interior of Norrland and parts of Smaland where the share with university education can be below 20 %. This affects school results directly — parental education level is the single strongest predictor of children's school performance.

The relationship is not about genetic ability but about cultural capital: books at home, expectations of further education, help with homework, and a home environment that supports learning. Children whose parents attended university often take for granted that they themselves will do so.

The map shows where tomorrow's inequality is already built into the structures. Breaking the pattern requires efforts that extend beyond the school walls — but school remains the most important lever society has.
