SALSA measures deviation per school — but this analysis places each school in its municipality's socioeconomic context. The x-axis shows a composite index of income and education level. The y-axis shows merit score. The colour reveals which schools exceed (green) or underperform (red) given their conditions.

Which schools make the most of their conditions?

Perhaps the most interesting question in Swedish school debate is not which schools have the best results — that correlates strongly with pupil background. The interesting question is which schools perform better or worse than what their conditions predict.

The chart combines two data sources: the municipality's socioeconomic index (calculated from median income and education level) and the SALSA score per school (actual merit score minus model-predicted).
