Largest operators

The 20 largest independent operators — pupil count and merit value.

The independent school sector is dominated by a handful of large groups. The five largest have more pupils than many municipalities. Scale can deliver efficiency — but it can also deliver uniformity. The question is not whether the groups are good or bad, but how much of the school landscape they shape without most of us noticing.

The largest independent school groups in Sweden

The Swedish independent school sector has since the 1990s evolved from small, local alternatives into a market dominated by large groups. The 20 largest independent operators together have hundreds of thousands of pupils.

Academedia, Internationella Engelska Skolan and Kunskapsskolan are among the largest operators. Their school networks span the entire country and their pupil numbers exceed the population of many Swedish municipalities.

The size of these groups provides economies of scale: centralised administration, shared teaching materials and brand-building. But it also raises questions about uniformity and profit extraction. The debate about profits in welfare has made these operators central figures in the education discourse.

The chart shows not only size but also average merit value. The relationship between group size and results is not straightforward — the very largest groups have merit values close to the national average, while some smaller operators stand out upwards or downwards.
