The future school map is drawn by demographics. This analysis uses historical data to calculate which municipalities have grown or shrunk the most in pupil numbers in recent years. Growing municipalities need to plan for more schools — shrinking ones must manage overcapacity.

Where is the pupil base growing and shrinking?

Demographics is school's most predictable variable — children born today become preschoolers in three years and school pupils in six. Yet many municipalities fail to dimension school places to match demographic reality.

The bar chart shows the municipalities where pupil numbers have changed the most over the past three years. Green bars show growth, red bars show decline. Percentage change gives a fairer picture than absolute numbers.
